- Become A Tutor
Back in 2010, when Rob & Lynne Kerrison from Saffron Walden were exploring various new business ideas, they stumbled across the Tutor Doctor brand. Tutor Doctor was launched in Toronto in 2001 by a gentleman called John Hooi. John had been in education for a long time and had his own learning centres which is how most tutoring takes place in North America. These centres are typically in industrial estates where parents drop off their children for an hour’s Maths or English after school and they benefit from more focused support and guidance outside of the classroom, sometimes one-to-one, but ordinarily in small groups.
So John set about developing a framework for independent business operators to deliver a local professional in-home tutoring service. He did it rather well. There are about 400 offices worldwide now, 35 in the UK.
In 2010, Rob and Lynne left successful careers in Marketing and HR respectively, and decided it was time to build a business together. They have always considered themselves to be a strong team and wanted to create a business they would be proud of. With their kids off to school and 40th birthdays on the horizon, they decided it was time to make their plans a reality.
Rob and Lynne went on the hunt for inspiration in order to start their scary journey away from corporate life. Just as they were researching various routes, a Canadian based business called Tutor Doctor was presented to them; it appealed to them on so many levels. The biggest attraction was that it was about helping people (and especially children) learn and helping them fulfil their potential. Rob and Lynne felt this business idea was perfect for them, perfect for their values and perfect for Cambridge.
Five years on and it’s proved to be just that.
Whilst Learning Centres like the ones Tutor Doctor were up against in North America do exist in the UK (and in Cambridge), they don’t dominate in the way they do in the USA: it’s a very different proposition. Learning Centres are mainly used by younger children who can make great strides by working in a different environment with a skilled facilitator who will issue exercises and worksheets, supervising their completion in very small groups and supplementing what the kids have been doing in their schools.
The majority of tutoring in the UK is by private, independent tutors. It’s a thriving industry but the problem is that the success rate of the tutor can be very hit and miss for parents and also some of the great tutors who are out there don’t have the time or business skills to manage their own marketing and administration.
Tutor Doctor Cambridge provides a professional but friendly, local service which offers the flexibility of the independent tutor to the families and schools but with more certainty that they are getting the right person for them. Our business seeks to find ways to add value to both the families and schools and also the tutors to deliver a solution that works best for all parties. This has continued to be our niche in the market and by adding value to both the families and the tutors we have been able to attract the very best tutors and can deliver a wholly different service for our customers.
Cambridge is a brilliant place to run a tutoring business. It’s a city that breathes education and our customers are parents who see the benefit of helping their children maximise their learning. They want to deliver future opportunities to their children and want to work with a business like ours that provides a service that helps them do just that.
The partnerships we are forming with schools is proof of the quality of our service and the schools and our existing customers are all at the heart of our growth as they refer us on to other students seeking our support.
