- Become A Tutor
Since 2010, Tutor Doctor Cambridge has focused on delivering the best service in one-to-one in-home tutoring, so the calibre of our team of tutors is everything. We are always looking to add to our team of outstanding tutors.
Please enter your details on the form below and we will get back in touch with regards to next steps. There is some more information further down the page on what we look for from our tutors and how we operate as an organisation.
We tutor students of all ages from primary through to adults, but we are especially busy for GCSE, A-levels and Keystage 2 students which includes helping with preparation for entrance exams, especially for The Perse and The Leys in Cambridge.
One-to-one tutoring works by having an expert tutor tailor the sessions for the student in a comfortable environment, helping them with the content, study and exam technique to help build their confidence and improve their grades and capability beyond their current level. We tutor all subjects. Maths, English and Sciences are always popular, but we also have high demand for Humanities, Economics, Business Studies, Psychology, languages… The list goes on.
We are looking for individuals who have good tutoring experience, expertise in their subject but more importantly have the passion and capability to help others learn and fulfil their potential. It is an added advantage to be a qualified teacher, a lot of our tutors are, but it’s not essential as some of our best tutors have never taught in the classroom.
At the initial customer consultation with one of our Education Consultants, we meet the students and their parents first in their homes to really understand the student’s needs so that we can match the right tutor with the family. This also means that all houses you go to have been pre-vetted by us, so your experience will be safe and enjoyable. Many of our tutors will tell us that they get fantastic students through us and wonder why that is. It’s not luck, it’s because we match them with students that we know will be a good fit for them.
Tutoring with Tutor Doctor is a great opportunity for extra income with flexible hours. Most of the in-home tutoring occurs between 4pm and 8pm weekdays, and also weekends so tutors can easily fit sessions around their normal working hours.
Over the past three years now we have started working directly with schools as well as working with families in the home. This is a fast-growing side to our organisation in Cambridge, so please do discuss this with us when you speak to us during the application process. The in-school tutoring could be straight after school, at lunch or during a free period during the school day and the sessions are either 1:1 or in very small groups. Sometimes the tutoring will take place at home, but the funding and the “client” will remain as the school or local authority. There will be increasingly more opportunities for tutors to work within schools going forward as this is the side of the business which is seeing the highest levels of growth. Most tutoring will be for the core subjects: Maths, English and Science and we select tutors who we know have the subject knowledge, reliability and enthusiasm to really help support these students, many of which are struggling with the subject and seeking the intervention that will help them to really turn a corner.
Tutor Doctor selects tutors based on subject area expertise as well as having the right interpersonal skills to engage, motivate and generally get the best out of your students. This does not mean that we only hire teachers to be tutors, but we do require experience and extensive knowledge of the subject area they will teach. The beauty of the Tutor Doctor approach in Cambridge is that we match tutors to each student based on learning style and personality. We seek to get to know the tutor, both during the application process but more so as we work together, week on week and by getting to know our tutors it helps us do a better job by our customers and makes our tutors feel very much part of our team, hopefully.
As tutoring typically takes place at the student’s home or in school, having your own car is a real benefit and will present more opportunities to the tutor.
