Roughly a third of the students we work with in and around Cambridge are of primary school age. We usually work with students on Literacy (English) and Numeracy (Maths), but occasionally we’re asked to tutor some languages like French and Spanish.
Sessions with younger students need to be engaging and well aligned with the classroom. We pride ourselves on sourcing interactive tutors who plan fun and captivating lessons for our primary students. Children have a fantastic array of after-school clubs on offer and can be very busy in the week. Tutoring sessions can’t be too late in the day because of the children’s age, so some families opt for tutoring on the weekends. Weekend tutoring has become increasingly popular for primary students as it is so convenient.
Tutor Doctor helps students in all types of English Language areas including phonics, grammar, writing, reading comprehension, handwriting, vocabulary, spelling, decoding, and more. Our English tutors help students leverage the skills they already possess, while building the new skills needed to master the curriculum.
For those who like to win, and especially for boys, English can appear to lack the immediacy of Maths; finishing the task and getting to the end first can seem more attractive than putting words down on a page. However, we know that a child’s reading proficiency and writing ability determines his or her general learning ability across all subjects. This is why our tutors aspire to create and foster a love for reading and writing early on with their student. Skills learnt in English tutoring can be transferred across every subject. Competency in Literacy is incredibly important, not least because writing well is crucial for future success at secondary school, but because it helps a child express themselves both in person and on paper.
At Tutor Doctor, we know that gaining fundamental maths skills early on will help the student throughout his or her life. Our tutors help overcome roadblocks that prevent students from following classroom discussions and learning along with the class. The maths skills learned early in a child’s schooling serve as the foundation for more complex maths at GCSE and beyond. If even the smallest piece of knowledge is missed, the consequence can be huge and the results frustrating.
You can trust Tutor Doctor tutors to help make Maths easier to understand. Our approach works within the student’s own homework and curriculum, plus we use our time together to rebuild any missing pieces that may have occurred along the way.
Students challenged with learning difficulties are very dear to Tutor Doctor and our special needs tutors are dedicated to helping them achieve their goals.
